Diy Loft insulation
Is DIY Loft insulation a Route for you?
When you’ve had to wait months for the couple of times a year that the large DIY stores have a good offer on, or when you spend most of the day queuing behind builders or other diy’ers in your store, then making numerous trips backward and forward to the store because you can only get a few rolls in your car with a squeeze will it seem good value?
If after struggling to load and then unload big heavy large rolls of insulation and get them up through the house and up through the hatch will it seem as easy, or you could use lots of smaller insulation rolls the more expensive encapsulated types you might wonder if it was a cost effective use of your time?
Knauf insulation are one of the main leaders in modern insulation one example is their excellent Space Blanket.
*(Knauf insulation, suggest in their leaflets that for an average semi detached house if you are using their Space Blanket) A semi detached house having 200mm fitted would require on average 55 Rolls.we usually see these retail for about £5 or £6 pounds. As the Americans say "you do the Maths".
The Government recommended insulation level for a loft is a minimum of 270mm achieving an R-Value of 6.1. With a higher R-Value you could save around £155 a year.
If after all the banging your head on the rafters in the roof a few times or the sweating you might feel itchy. Also every time you breath into your facemask your glasses steam up, or if you put your foot through the ceiling you may think to yourself was it really a good idea to do it yourself?
We really do have every respect for anyone that has the time and energy to do it themselves because they are doing their bit to conserve energy and help to save the Planet and their fuel costs. If that’s the only option available to you then your efforts will be well worth it.
The experts know how to ensure the insulation they fit will be a real benefit to your house and won’t create problems later. We have inspected lofts that are dripping with condensation because of a previous poor DIY job also others when the insulation has been loaded up to the Sarking felt in an effort to really beef up the insulation it has caused wicking where the cold and warm parts met and the cold bridging allowed water to run down onto the ceiling below with evident staining. Good ventilation is essential in the roof space if in doubt ask an expert.
However what takes the experts, (there are often two of them) an hour or two to complete will probably take you the best part of the day or more?
Is it worth all the stress? You could however get someone else to pay for most of the materials and labour costs for you and sit back and leave it to the professionals!
