Houses have been built with cavity walls from as early as the 1920's they are more common from about 1935.

 

The simple way to tell is by viewing the brickwork bonds if the brickwork has most of the bricks running lengthwise or as they are called Stretchers and do not have lots of 1/2 bricks or headers as they are properly called this usually indicates a cavity wall.

Can I Do It Myself ?

 

 

For building professionals & self build enthusiasts it is possible to install insulation in a new building or extension to comply with the rules for home energy efficiency. But when it comes to retrofitting insulation in an existing cavity wall even a qualified builder would find it would not be worth all the expense and trouble.

 

Firstly you would have to spend a great deal of money buying the equipment as to the best of my knowledge it cannot be hired. So that would cost several thousand pounds then you would have to buy the materials and as this type of installation would not be grant funded you would have to pay the full cost for all the material used.

You would also have to do quite a lot of work without the benefit of several years learning curve to make the job straight forward.

 

And lastly you would have no CIGA guarantee for any self installed work.

 

Alternatively for between £149 or even if it was £199 it would be easier to just let the professionals do it!  We even provide free surveys which show if the work can be done.
